Unpaid Carers

Unpaid carers are Scotland’s largest social care workforce.  Since the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016, self-directed support has been the vehicle for unpaid carers who are eligible for social work funded support to carry out their caring duties.  This means that unpaid carers who have support should have access to the same flexibility in arranging their support as disabled people.

Following on from our Unpaid Carers Action Learning Sets, which we ran in 2025, we will be running another three sessions in June and August 2026. At these sessions we will bring back together unpaid carers, people working with carers from service providers, and Local Authorities to build on our learning from our previous sessions around the flexibility of budgets for unpaid carers. We will also use these sessions to test out the Unpaid Carers toolkit that we created from the information and support we received from attendees at the Action Learning Sets in 2025.

Our sessions will take place on:

  • Wednesday 3rd June 2026 - 10:00 am - 11:30 am

  • Wednesday 17th June 2026 - 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

  • Wednesday 26th August 2026 - 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Participants will learn from each other and from guest speakers, share examples from their own experiences, and collaborate on change projects.  As with all of our grant funded projects, participation in this is free.

If you would like to get involved in this project, or would like to talk to us about self-directed support for unpaid carers, get in touch:  info@in-controlscotland.org.uk
